Achieving Optimal Health
In December of 2015, The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) published an article recommending that adolescent girls be asked about the patterns of their menses and overall menstrual cycle, their female ‘fifth vital sign’, at every regular doctor’s office visit for the purpose of monitoring and treating their reproductive health. We know that adolescents suffer from a variety of reproductive diseases, disorders, and conditions. It is also true that in the United States the primary treatment method for most reproductive health abnormalities is hormonal birth control. Furthermore, hormonal birth control does not address the underlying cause of the condition and some synthetic hormones have been associated with negative short and long term health outcomes. That said, hormonal birth control is not the only option for young girls!

Charting the female ‘fifth vital sign’ with the Creighton Model FertilityCare™System allows trained physicians to identify underlying causes of reproductive health problems and appropriately target corrective and cooperative treatments. In addition, charting empowers young females with knowledge and awareness about their bodies and has been associated with improving adolescent sexual health outcomes!
